Spring Fire Safety Tips

Springtime is upon us, and with a new season, there are new fire safety concerns.
Here are few for you to consider…..

1. Brush Fires:
Many of you may think the most active time for outside brush fires is summer time, due to the heat. But the fact of the matter is that the true brush fire season is springtime. With the lack of leaves on the trees allowing heat from the sun to travel all the way to the ground coupled with the normally windy spring conditions, perfect brush fire conditions are present this time of year. Here are some tips to prevent this problem:

  • Do not discard smoking materials from moving vehicles, use ashtrays instead.

  • When pulling to the side of the road, try to stay of dry grassy areas while the car idles.

  • Do not operate all-terrain vehicles on dry vegetation areas.

  • Make sure that the spark-arrester feature is working on your lawn mower.

  • Never leave outdoor fires unattended.

NOTE : Please check with your local fire department before burning brush. Most towns, including Norwich, require a permit to do this.

2. Smoke Detectors:
Daylight savings is just around the corner. This is a good “landmark day” to replace battery in your smoke detector.

3. Gas Grills:
Many people have not used their gas grills since last fall. Now is a good time to check for any leaks associated with the tank and piping. A water/liquid soap mixture sprayed on the tank, piping and connections will alert you to any problems. (If the mixture “bubbles up” then you have a leak.)
